I spent Tuesday in the studio finishing up a song called “Fairchild West.” It’s a little embarrassing to admit I’ve been working on this one since 2012…maybe even before that. I borrowed most of the vibraphone part from the first movement of Dichterliebe, a godawful depressing art song I had to analyze in theory class in college:

At the time, I was not a fan. Frankly, I’m STILL not a fan. However, I found the lyrics to be moving (when I read the translation…I don’t speak German)…especially since unrequited love has fallen out of fashion. In our modern world of self-help books, it felt good to remember I wasn’t the only one in the history of the universe who couldn’t just “get over it”…

I’m still waiting for the engineer to put the finishing touches on the song. I also might delay release so that I can make another video. In the meantime…enjoy Dichterliebe!
