(For audio only, click here) I’m a little scared to post this one, because I pulled over into a parking lot immediately after watching the show to record my thoughts while they were still fresh. Then I went home and read a bunch of reviews and started to worry that my thoughts were not valid. For example, several reviewers thought the son’s transformation was not believable. However, I could relate to it, because my own journey to awareness of my whiteness and privilege looked very similar to his. Another reviewer thought the character of the father was “the voice of reason;” I thought he was kind of a jackass. I’m also concerned I was incorrect to say that the son’s initial angry monologue makes a few salient points about the arbitrary nature of who is considered a person of color and who isn’t when it comes to college admissions. I’m going to go ahead and post this and see what kinds of reactions I get. I’m willing to apologize if I’ve made a mistake in this area.
